Interesting Data Sets: Part 1
Getting ready to do my New Year’s shopping (much preferred to Christmas shopping, in my opinion), I came across the Ohio Liquor Sales Report.
Some (possibly) interesting observations:
Liquor sales (in gallons) are up 2% year to date — Drink up, it’s a recession?
But liquor sales (in gallons) are down 3% in the first half of December
The most popular liquor (by volume) is...

Bleg: Travel Advice
Looking like I’ll be headed to Ireland for spring break this year - flying in + out of Dublin.
If you’ve been there, any advice? What cities are must sees? Should we rent a car? Stay in hostels or B&Bs? How bad will the weather be (in mid-March)?

This is what happens when emo boys get famous and lose a lot of weight. They marry unreasonably gorgeous hipster girls who, five years ago, wouldn’t have even given them a second look.
For some reason the whole thing irritates me, even though I really like both of them. *sigh*
The hipster world is in an...

Here’s the gist of the story from CNN… young Jew boy imprisoned in a Nazi death camp falls in love with a German girl who risks her life by feeding him apples that she tosses over the camp fence on a daily basis for months. Eventually, he is moved to another concentration camp, but survives until the war’s end. Once freed, he moves to America.
Fast forward more than a decade later...

Dad: [to cashier lady] Is this buffet terrible?
Cashier lady: Yes, this is Terrible's!
Dad: This is a terrible buffet?
Cashier lady: [half exasperated, half bemused] Yes, yes, everything here is terrible! It's ALL terrible!
We went to Terrible's to have brunch instead of the legendary Wynn. I'm convinced it was entirely so that Dad could continuously make jokes about our meal being "terrible" for the next hour.

When you and a friend decide to take a picture together, MySpace Style. You hold your friend’s camera out and you both try to look your coolest/sexiest/hippest. In the first picture, your skin is glowing, your smile is beautiful, your hair shines. Your friend hates the way she (or he) looks and deletes it. You take it again. In the second photo, your friend appears...

Poor soul, the centre of my sinful earth,

Why dost thou pine within and suffer dearth,
Painting thy outward walls so costly gay?
Why so large cost, having so short a lease,

Internet Throwback: Bexley's LiveJournal Community →
Four and a half years ago, I tried to create a LJ community for my little Columbus suburb. It never took off, but digging up this post cracked me up.
Sloppy
One of my least favorite things in the world is finding typos when reading through old emails or blog entries.
There’s the nasty feeling that someone noticed you looking like an idiot - and it’s clearly too late now to correct yourself. And then there’s also the blow to my grammar nazi / spelling champion ego.
Nonetheless, I remain steadfast in my opposition to proofreading.

Ruining It for the Rest of Us
Caught a great snippet of This American Life about vaccinations on my way to lunch with Weezey.
There’s a pretty intense debate over mandatory vaccination between public health experts who want to eliminate measles/mumps/etc and concerned parents who think the vaccines may increase the risk of autism and autoimmune diseases.
In today’s episode, TAL framed things as a tragedy of the...

– Dock Ellis, the only pitcher in baseball history to throw a no-hitter while taking LSD, died this morning at the age of 63. I think someone tossing a no-hitter on acid is one of the 10 most amazing things that have ever happened in baseball, or on earth. (via leitch)
