some delicious claim chowder courtesy of the ch!cktionary

This is the second time I’ve heard what has to be one of the most absurd arguments in recent memory.

Obama’s health care plan is flawed because “there won’t be enough doctors to take care of everyone.”

First, I can think of about a hundred reasons why this claim is just outright false (i.e. there may be ~10% of “slack” in the current system, or decreased demand for emergency room services is balanced by increased primary care demand).

Second, even if it is true, and giving everyone health insurance will mean a longer wait when you want to see your PCP or Specialist… so what? Do you really more of a right to a short wait time, than an uninsured person has to see a doctor at all?

Third, even if this is a problem, and even if you do have a right to see a doctor with < 2 weeks of wait time, this isn’t a hard problem to solve. Grant visas to doctors from foreign countries (like the US did with Philippine Nurses) or invest in increasing the size of med schools. While we certainly need highly qualified, well-trained doctors, it seems to me (as someone who considered becoming a doctor) that the whole process has far too many unnecessary roadblocks.
