Good/Free Mac Software

caseyliss:

So, I’ve decided that unless something big happens, I’m going to buy myself my first Mac on Monday. Once I get it home, I need some direction on what to install.

What are the “essential” pieces of Mac software? I’d prefer free, but if it’s really really worth it, I may pay for something.

Marco isn’t a fan, but I am entirely in love with NetNewsWire, especially now that it’s free. Set up a NewsGator account to get a Google reader-like web interface that syncs with the rich client.

I really love Coda for web development, it combines a great text editor, FTP client, css editor, and terminal in one window, which simplifies the whole experience. (That said, there are probably better text editors, ftp clients, etc. out there). It’s not free, and probably due for a big release soon, so you may not want to buy it now.

Twitterific is a great desktop twitter client (I like twhirl as well).
