Tumblr Strategy

shutupinternet:

I began using Tumblr back in April and since then I’ve noticed some obvious strategies if you’re a tumblr trying to get reblogs, make the Radar/Tumblr Explore, and gain the maximum amount of followers.

There is obviously the Obama/Chuck Palahniuk/Cute Animal/Anti-Palin strategy where every user and their mother jumps on your post for a reblog because you’re just that cool. That’s rookie stuff.

Another strategy that is not so widely used is attempting to ‘aim’ your posts at a particular user. In some instances, users have temporarily redirected the content that they post to catch the eye of certain, widely-known Tumblr users in hopes reblogs leading to followers and in turn, they themselves becoming a Tumblr power-user. Again, this strategy or semi-manipulation of Tumblr, rather, is something rather less used than the strategies stated before.

I’m sure some users have noticed that there are certain peak times for posting content, primarily times when the most New Yorkers/East Coasters are online. I remember a post a few weeks ago along the lines of: “Tumblr is slow right now, the East Coasters must be on their way home.” The next post from that user didn’t come for quite another bit of time, he was clearly waiting for his audience to expand again.

This strategy is quite simple and I’ve seen it commented on by a few different users: save reminders, links, pictures, etc. until the Dashboard is ripe with influxes of new content and post your stash then. The Audience Expansion strategy is more widely used than the Content Aiming strategy but still, not as widely used as the aforementioned Obama strategy.

Finally, one of the most effective Tumblr strategies is Niche Blogging. Niche Blogging implies the same strategy as magazines use. Instead of posting a wide variety of content from all of your different interests, narrow it down to one or two that are similar and targe a specific audience. By targeting an audience with a specific interest and focusing solely on that interest, your audience is limited but more likely to be hooked for longer periods of time.

These are just some of the few strategies Tumblr users utilize to obtain the maximum amount of exposure and subsequently, followers. The psychology that Tumblrs use to manipulate the system is pretty interesting. It’s something I look forward to exploring more in the future.

And this post is evidence of yet another strategy - the metapost!
