So I’m doing my usual, idiotic “insomniac-by-choice” bit, and solving this week’s NYTimes crosswords.
Despite always thinking that crosswords are nice, relaxing, and sleep-inducing. Monday’s puzzle gets me into a mild fury as I try to finish it before the 10 minute mark. As I enter the last letter, I get the dreaded “The grid is complete” message (vs. the “You’ve correctly filled out the puzzle” - with a clip art pencil with a smiley face).
I give in, & have the software check my solution for wrong answers - turns out I thought that “Bleated” = BAAAD, while it was really BAAED (the cross “Romanian money” was no help - as Sandra wasn’t online).
So I was furious, and the only person who could save me was Rex Parker, the hilarious, brilliant crossword blogger. And he comes through with a delightful birthday present - bashing the hell out of the crossword writer for such a horrible intersection on a Monday puzzle (“Here’s the one thing I don’t understand about this puzzle - why the LEU / BAAED crossing didn’t cause the constructor to go “Oh, hell no, I can’t do that,” and start the NE corner over”).
Thanks, Rex.
