2arrs2ells:

The IM worm hit my GTalk contacts pretty hard… so I looked into it a bit. Ended up leading to a 3-4 hour investigative journalism adventure with phone calls to lawyers and a path that led to a dude in San Francisco.

Tell me what you think of my newswriting! I’m going to try to write a bit here about old media/new media, and what it would have been like if I’d Tumbl’d this instead.

hey, 2arrs2ells — nice! (the answer, and the writing too).

the only thing I was hit with, though, were all the emails on my lists warning me about the bug. the blanket rule, as always, being never enter login info?

also, my simplified model on the spread of technology: porn —> beta version —> everybody —> virus.

I didn’t fall for it myself, but I came closer than I would have expected. Unlike most phishing sites, this one had pretty decent web design (that sort of generic Web 2.0 feel). And, to be honest, I’ve become rather lax about entering my Google account info to sites that aren’t Google - doing it for twitter/linkedin/last.fm to find contacts who use those services.

Hopefully this worm acts as a wake up call. And hopefully Hoan isn’t using all of the email accounts he (may) control to reset banking passwords and clear out peoples’ savings.
