Photo reblogged from All the Alex Bain you can handle! with 4 notes

alexbain:

The further I get into the book Baseball Between the Numbers, the more I realize that there’s a whole world of baseball wisdom I’ve been missing all along, and I feel almost too far behind to catch up. Every chapter makes me realize how much of what I thought about the game was wrong, and how much more fun it will be to watch baseball as I learn more.
Consequently, I’m finding having a friend like Steve, who has his black belt in Sabermetrics to be very valuable. It reminded me of a running list I used to joke about: Topics for which I’d rather befriend an expert than become one”…
Art history
Latin
Accounting
The night life in whatever city I’m living in
Men’s fashion
Computer programming
Cooking (though I’m happy to become, one day, an expert on the grill)
Am I the only one who’s been casually keeping such a list?
I think that, for a number of my friends, I’m the expert they call when they need to know something about:
Apple products
Things to do on Cape Cod
Setting up a blog
Cats
Productivity methods
Spinning a pen around one’s finger
Boston’s history
Twitter
Teddy bears (I never thought I’d be an expert on that topic)
Pro sports licensing
United Airline’s Mileage Plus rewards program
(Increasingly) Internet marketing
I guess I’m proud of that list :-)

I really like this way of thinking about things… although I have a bad habit of trying to build up my second list when I should just rely on the first list (to the detriment of my sleep, sanity, etc).
